Wireless electronics have become ubiquitous in modern life. The costs associated with power supply equipment, maintenance, and transportation are enormous, making them a little known but highly significant contributor to the demand on gird power. Renewable power sources have been intensively explored, but major challenges remain in realization of compact and robust systems including development of power selection tools that offer agile selection of hybrid systems from among the many advanced sources available and life-cycle analysis of compact power supplies such as considerations of disposal and/or recyclability. Coursework in this area includes topics on specific portable power technologies and design for sustainable systems.
